Art Project Los Angeles Announces Fundraiser 'Plastic Jesus'
EDGE null READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Art Project Los Angeles is excited to announce "Plastic Jesus" as the featured artist of the fifth annual fundraiser for AIDS Project Los Angeles, which takes place June 6 at Bonhams in Hollywood. "Plastic Jesus" was selected from a group of talented artists in the event's first-ever juried competition and will be featured in the Art Project catalogue as well as in the event's live auction.
"Plastic Jesus" is a Los Angeles-based street artist who specializes in bold works inspired by current events, the urban environment, pop culture, and politics. He utilizes irony and criticism to create artworks that engage on multiple levels. His eye-catching pieces include the recent "No Kardashian Parking Anytime" signs recently posted in Los Angeles, as well as the ongoing project in which the artist stenciled the now-iconic phrase "Stop Making Stupid People Famous" throughout the streets of Los Angeles, New York, London and Paris. A unique, one-off canvas work with this phrase made specifically for Art Project 2015 will be featured in the event's live auction.
"We're thrilled to have 'Plastic Jesus' as our featured artist," Art Project Committee Chair and APLA Board Chair Mark Perrin says. "His work is smart, irreverent, and topical, and we think it's a great fit for a contemporary art event in Los Angeles."
Art Project Los Angeles begins with a silent auction and cocktail party inside Bonhams, followed by a live auction of items ranging from photography and paintings to furniture, sculpture, and other unique pieces. In addition to "Plastic Jesus'" work, Art Project 2015 will offer pieces by many renowned artists, including Keith Haring, Tom of Finland, Andy Warhol, Sage Vaughn, Shepard Fairey, and Ed Ruscha, among many others.
Proceeds from Art Project Los Angeles support a variety of vital services that APLA and APLA Health & Wellness provide to over 12,000 Angelenos every year, including: primary medical, dental, and behavioral health care services; HIV testing and STD screening; the Vance North Necessities of Life Program food pantry program; in-home health services; housing assistance; and HIV prevention efforts; among many others.
Art Project Los Angeles is supported by a host of generous sponsors: premier sponsors include Bonhams and Hamilton-Selway Fine Art; grand sponsors include Comerica Bank, Ed Ruscha, and HBO; supporting sponsors include Angel City Brewery and Leslie Barclay of Southern Wine and Spirits; and media sponsors include Here Media and Metrosource.
