Marco Rubio Focuses on Anti-Gay Marriage Plan
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
In an attempt to outdo his rivals for the GOP presidential nomination, Sen. Marco Rubio doubled down on LGBT equality this week, vowing to overturn the Supreme Court's landmark ruling legalizing same-sex marriage if elected president. He also recently created an advisory board about the issue.
During the Republican presidential debate Saturday night, the junior senator from Florida said he would create a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage if elected president.
"We are going to be a country that says a marriage is between one man and one woman," Rubio said.
Rubio seems to be playing catch up to his two biggest rivals, Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Cruz has promised to overturn the high court's same-sex marriage decision while Trump suggested a similar plan of action. According to Gay Star News, Cruz reportedly claimed Rubio said that SCOTUS' ruling is the law of the land.
When Rubio recently spoke with CNN, he called out Cruz, saying he is firm on his anti-gay marriage views.
"The bottom line is, there's been this disturbing pattern the last couple of weeks of Ted Cruz saying things that are not true," he told CNN's Dana Bash. "Just in the last week, he's lied about my record on marriage. He's lied about my record on Planned Parenthood. Of course he lied about Ben Carson in Iowa. Last night Donald Trump says he's issuing robocalls, doing the same thing to him. And then he also isn't telling the truth about immigration."
Rubio also spoke out about gay marriage on Fox News Sunday, saying he believes the Supreme Court's ruling can be overturned.
"I disagree with the decision - I've always said I think it's bad law," he said.
Gay Star News also reports Rubio, who is currently campaigning in South Carolina ahead of of the state's primary this weekend, went even further with his anti-gay marriage stance by creating the Marco Rubio's Marriage & Family Advisory Board, which seems to take aim against same-sex marriage.
"The Supreme Court's decisions in Windsor and Obergefell are only the most recent example of our failure as a society to understand what marriage is and why it matters," Eric Teetsel, the Rubio campaign's director of faith outreach, said in a press release.
He continued: "For decades, we have taken for granted the unique and necessary contributions of moms and dads in the lives of their children, from lax divorce laws to marriage penalties in the tax code and the failure of husbands and wives to live up to their marriage vows. Marco understands the many causes of family breakdown and the consequences. He has pulled together a board of experts who understand the same and have devoted themselves to rebuilding a vibrant culture of marriage and family."
