Narcopolis
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.
The science fiction film with the clever title, "Narcopolis" features a large scope plot but is thin on execution. IFC Midnight Films and Shout Factory present this independent movie from first time director/writer Justin Trefgarne.
The quite convoluted plot of "Narcopolis" goes something like this: In the not so distant future of 2024, all drugs and narcotics are legal and can be used for whatever purpose. Frank (Elliot Cowen) is known as a Dreck, a cop that's part of a police unit to keep drug dealers off the streets.
When Frank discovers a dug company called Ambro, he realizes that all isn't well and that the greedy company wants more than just money. Suddenly, a time travel plot device comes into play - and not well I might add - furthering confusion for the viewer.
As science fiction, "Narcopolis" fails miserably. It works much better as a drama piece, especially regarding the relationship of lead character Frank and his dealings with his wife and son...who happen to be real wife and son of director Trefgarne. The performance of Cowen is the highpoint in "Narcopolis."
Speaking of Trefgarne, he's the main focal point in the special features department on Scream Factory's Blu-ray. He does an audio commentary and in the dragging behind-the-scenes featurette, he excitedly talks about how the story of "Narcopolis" came about.
One sole deleted scene shows the character of Frank going into the year 2044, while the theatrical trailer highlights the supposed sci-fi elements of the film.
