PopUps: Sia Surprises Gay 'Survivor' Player With $50K

It was a wild night for "Survivor: Kaoh Rong" fans, when Michele Fitzgerald became the sole survivor of the long-lasting reality show's 32nd season Wednesday. But in an incredible and unexpected TV moment, pop star Sia rushed the stage to laud openly gay contestant Tai and gave him $50,000.

The "Chandelier" singer revealed herself to be a massive fan of CBS's "Survivor" and admitted she fell in love with Tai -- so much so that she felt the need to give him a huge chunk of change and also said she'd donate an additional $50,000 to an animal charity of his choice.

Tai was a fan favorite throughout the season because of his unique approach to life and philosophy of respecting the earth and all living things. One of the things Tai, who placed third last night, was known for was convincing the rest of his tribe mates to keep a chicken they won as a reward alive throughout the entire run of the show. The bird, dubbed Mark The Chicken, became a meme on social media, with someone creating a parody account for him.

"Survivor" host Jeff Probst talked about the Sia moment in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, admitting that though the two are friends, it wasn't a stunt and he was totally surprised.

Then she started walking toward me and my mind started racing. All I was thinking at that moment was, We don't have a camera on her, she doesn't have a microphone. Then I think I went a bit into autopilot. Okay, this is happening, so just go with it and tell the story. I knew I needed to explain that Sia and I were friends and that this really was Sia. After that. I just let her take over. Once I heard her start talking about how inspired she was by Tai and his approach to life and all living things I started to understand the moment. This is the woman I know. Sia is the most "in the moment" person that I know. She just does what she feels and says what she means. Like it or not.

...

But here's the most salient fact regarding Sia: I honestly don't think of Sia as a pop star, even though she is a global phenom. I know her as my friend who is so passionate about the rights of all humans and animals. Whether it's LGBTF organizations or a random chicken on Survivor, Sia is someone who really cares deeply about equal rights and being a good person regardless your status in life. She's a really kind soul who happens to write amazing music.
