READ TIME: 2 MIN.
New York City police said a transgender woman was attacked by a group of at least five men last week as she walked from a subway in Brooklyn, New York City, Washington, D.C. NBC-affiliate station WRC-TV reports.
The 32-year-old victim, who remains anonymous, was walking in Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood on May 13 around 11:30 p.m. when she was ambushed, authorities said, according to the news station.
In an interview with with WRC-TV, the victim said she got off the subway when she saw a man walk up to her. She was then suddenly surrounded. She said they yelled a slur at her when she tried to walk away.
"I was just trying to get away at that point, I just didn't want any altercation," she said. "Next thing you know, I got my hair pulled and was just getting hit in multiple directions, fists at the same time."
She continued: "These individuals seem like they would do it to the next person, would brutally beat up somebody."
The victim, who suffered a facial fracture from the attack, said she's recovering and is keeping positive despite the brutal incident.
"It can be traumatic but you can't let someone that's hateful keep you down," she told WRC-TV.
NYPD's Hate Crime Task Force is currently investigating the attack and assessing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Authorities have yet to make an arrest but police think the suspects are in their late teens or early 20s.
The incident comes after Pearl Love, a trans woman, recorded a cis woman attacking her on a New York City subway earlier this month, Her video went viral and even caught the attention of Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, who commented on Pearl's Facebook post, offering support.
