I Think You Think Too Much of Me
JC Alvarez READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Effortlessly blending organic sounds with electronic synthesizers and moody vocals, the artist known as EDEN puts forth a uniquely poetic set of tracks on his latest EP. Simply titled "i think you think too much of me" the Irish singer-songwriter born Jonathan Ng is obviously exercising some new muscles. Having spent a good part of his career producing anthems for the electronic dance music festival crowd under the moniker of The Eden Project, EDEN is now taking a moment.
Stepping back works beautifully for EDEN. Breaking things down to their base rhythms and focusing on the lyrics have produced some very hypnotic concoctions on his EP. Broken into two separate acts, the first trickles in the beats, allowing for some elaborately unusual vocal arrangements to profoundly make their way to the surface, as is most eloquently realized on the track titled "drugs." It's both relentless and romantic. Filled with a rollicking heartache and expressiveness that is unique and engaging, it works.
The EP opens with the artists more heavily produced "sex" which breaks wonderfully and forces the listener to listen really to the lyrics - and who does that anymore (really). EDEN makes the vocal journey worth taking the time to invest. "sex" has a wonderfully uplifting melody and ebbs and flows in and out of natural sounds and an electronically enhanced vocal performance that is near intoxicating. "Circles" closes out the EP and is a truly well structured and stripped down performance and perfectly wraps the setlist experience.
EDEN may not be what the EDM crowd is expecting, and it's not even "after hours" lounge music, but the artist who has made a career in the dance medium is happily evolving and taking his audience along for the ride. And, the EP has some highs and lows; it demands attention. Though it is quietly expressive and the narrative is low-light, it's a beautifully resonating journey in music that is worthy of a listen. Not for the dance floor; definitely for the heart strings.
