The Savage Innocents

Transferred and restored from its original VistaVision negative (a higher resolution, the widescreen variant of the 35 mm motion picture film format which was created by engineers at Paramount Pictures in 1954), Nicholas Ray's thrilling adventure film, "The Savage Innocents," arrives on a new Blu-ray release from Olive Films.

Written for the screen and directed by Ray, "The Savage Innocents" was adapted by Hans Ruesch from his novel, "Top of the World." Anthony Quinn stars as Inuk, an Eskimo outlaw, wanted for the murder of a local priest.

Utilizing many of Ray's signature themes of emotion, and combining these with a philosophical juxtaposition of the white man versus the isolated, indigenous people, the film certainly provides far more in the long run than it initially hints at.

Unfortunately, with this release, all that can be accounted for is the film itself, as there are zero bonus features included.

However, the remastered quality of both the image and sound create a worthy purchase for fans of Ray's filmography, collectors and casual fans of adventure. The Arctic landscapes in this film alone (photographed by Aldo Tonti and Peter Hennessy) are enough to deem it worthy of a watch; it's just a shame that beyond the movie itself, there's nothing here.
