8 Heads in A Duffel Bag

Even if it isn't a particularly great comedy, 1997's "8 Heads in a Duffel Bag" is still a very funny one. It suffers from a lot of the identity crises that often plague comedies with aspirations of mimicking the screwball and slapstick genres-sometimes it works and other times, it falls flatter and harder than a physical comedy pratfall. "8 Heads in a Duffel Bag" is certainly a mixed bag. For each blast of casual racism and non-hitting stupidity, there's a joke, or a physical gag, or even an expression on an actor's face, that absolutely kills.

Joe Pesci, as a ruthless hitman attempting to regain the titular luggage from a clueless schmuck (Andy Comeau) after their bags are inadvertently swapped at the airport, is often the actor in question when the comedy gold is occurring on screen. It truly is one of the great American comedic performances, even if it's within the confines of a movie that's always struggling to keep up with Pesci's talents.

Pesci hits all the beats perfectly. His line delivery is always on point. His reaction shots are remarkably textured in expressive silliness. There's a scene very early on where Pesci is singing in his car that very well may be the funniest moment in the entire film.

Admittedly, "8 Heads in a Duffel Bag" is an odd choice to be picked up for a Blu-ray release by Twilight Time Movies, but lo and behold, here we have it. The bonus features include the Twilight Time go-to of an isolated music track, as well as a theatrical trailer.
