Singer Shawn Mendes' Fake 'Coming Out' Tweet Goes Viral
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
A fake tweet someone Photoshopped of Shawn Mendes coming out as gay went viral this week, according to J-14.
The message was shared shortly after he performed at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night and eventually spawned the hashtag #ShawnComingOut to trend.
The doctored tweet reads: "Guys my sexuality shouldn't be anyone's business. Yes, I'm gay and I'm proud."
J-14 concluded, however, that the screen shot of the so-called deleted tweet is totally fake: "[U]pon closer examination, it's easy to conclude this is the work of some Photoshop and no, he didn't really tweet this. It's unclear as to why someone decided to draft up this fake tweet...[w]hether it's a joke or not, making assumptions about a person's sexuality at the end of the day is just so not cool."
Fans were quick to react to the fake coming out tweet.
Gay rumors have plagued the "Mercy" singer for years, sparking Mendes to address the issue in a video last year.
"I notice a lot of people say I give them a 'gay vibe,'" he says. "First of all, I'm not gay. Second of all it shouldn't make a difference if I was or I wasn't the focus should be on the music not my sexuality."
Mendes has not commented about the fake tweet. Check out his video refuting gay rumors below.
