The Seven-Ups

Along with its release of 1972's "The New Centurions," Twilight Time Movies seems to be celebrating the understated 1970s cop drama this month with another limited-edition release - 1973's "The Seven-Ups."

Produced and directed by Philip D'Antoni, the film stars Roy Scheider as the lead policeman in a group known as The Seven-Ups (they use unorthodox tactics to entrap criminals on charges that land them in jail for seven years or more, hence their moniker). Before this film, D'Antoni served as a producer on two of the decade's grittiest and most memorable crime sagas, "The French Connection" and "Bullitt," the former of which earned him a Best Picture Academy Award in 1971.

What "The Seven-Ups" has in common with the other two D'Antoni-produced films is that all three feature a memorable car chase sequence (an action film staple that's creation is often credited to "The French Connection"). Several other production overlaps occur between "The French Connection" and "The Seven-Ups," but both stand on their own as engaging, character-and-action-driven examples of one of the 1970s best genres. They both deserve to be discussed in the same sentence.

Twilight Time Movies, which releases 3,000 units of limited-edition Blu-rays each month, is often lacking in bonus materials despite their respectable restorations. This is not the case with "The Seven-Ups," which contains more bonus features than I've ever seen on a Twilight Time release. These include:

Isolated Music Track of the Don Ellis Film Score
Isolated Music Track of the Unused Johnny Mandel Score
Audio Commentary with Film Historian Richard Harland Smith
 Introduction by Director-Producer Philip D'Antoni
 "The Seven-Ups" Connection
 A Tony Lo Bianco Type
 Real to Reel
 Cut to the Chase
Anatomy of a Chase: Behind the Scenes of the Filming of "The Seven-Ups"
 Randy Jurgensen's Scrapbook
 Super 8 Version
Lobby Cards, Stills and Media Gallery
 Original Theatrical Trailers
