The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey

The time-travel film genre can be quite tricky to pull of successfully. One that pulls it off nicely is another gem from the archived vaults presented by Arrow Video. "The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey" isn't just a time travel movie... look no further than the film's subtitle, and you'll see that the New Zealand movie has the word "adventure" written all over it.

"The Navigator" begins with a blurb about it being the 14th Century in England and the Black Death plague has wiped out many residents. A young boy has mysterious visions that he wants to bring to reality. His fellow villagers band together and start digging a tunnel, only to discover the 20th Century on the other side in New Zealand.

The group must decide which is worse: Going back to England, where they will surely die, or face the world 600 years in the future, which both frightens and thrills them.

"The Navigator" holds up very well for a film from 1989, and its combination of black-and-white footage mixed with color scenes gives the film a quite unique look.

Arrow Video treats "The Navigator" like the long-lost classic that it is, giving it an amazing high-definition restoration from the original camera negative, as well as tacking on several special features to enjoy:

"Appreciation by Nick Roddick" - the film critic lovingly explains how this film had an impact in New Zealand and its lasting impression on the time-travel movie genre

"Kaleidoscope: Vincent Ward - Film Maker" - an archived documentary which profiles the director of "The Navigator," which originally aired on TV in New Zealand

And "Theatrical Trailer."
