Tideland
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.
I'm not really "420 friendly," but if I were, I'd have smoked a little and watched Arrow Video's new trippy Blu-ray release. I'd never heard of "Tideland" before; the film is a 2005 independent that features two of my favorite actors, Jeff Bridges ("Against All Odds") and Jennifer Tilly ("Bound"). It's the tenth film from director Terry Gilliam ("Twelve Monkeys") and was adapted from the cult novel of the same name.
Colorful and vibrant only begins to describe "Tideland," a modern gothic tale about nine-year-old Rose who has drug-addicted parents (Bridges and Tilly). When she discovers her deceased father, Rose goes to great lengths to keep him alive and dreams up elaborate fantasy sequences. It's here that director Terry Gilliam has a field day, keeping the viewer wondering what is reality and what is fantasy.
"Tideland" looks all that much better in a stunning 2K film presentation. The large array of special edition contents on Arrows Blu-ray makes this high-definition restoration of the film even more enticing:
"Getting Gilliam" - the making of "Tideland" as narrated by Vincenzo Natali
"Filming Green Screen" - a look at how certain special effects sequences were created
Various audio commentaries and interview segments with Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Tilly, and director Terry Gilliam round out a generous Blu-ray package from Arrow.
