She-Ra and the Princesses Of Power

The power has returned! Most millennials will not remember the phenomenon of "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" a popular line of rough and tumble action figures designed to compete in the growing boys market of the mid-80s. It wasn't long before the toy marketers extended the brand to appeal to girls as well! With everything old being new again, Dreamworks has revisited "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" the first season premiering on Netflix.

Once upon a time, there were twins separated at birth who would hold the key to powerful forces that would shift the balance of mastery of the universe! In the two-part premiere episodes "The Sword" the rebooted origin story introduces audiences to a new Adora, an ambitiously capable soldier in service of The Horde, defending the planet Etheria against the Princesses of Power. Adora is top of her class and eyed as the next force captain that will be tasked with leading the militant forces of the Horde against the growing rebellion and powerful princesses.

Orphaned at birth, Adora is discovered by the Horde's mysteriously shrouded Shadow Weaver and raised among their ranks. She's never known anything outside of the Fright Zone, an overly industrialized urban cauldron of a city, and believes all the xenophobic fear-mongering propaganda that Lord Hordak, the leader of The Horde has been feeding her and her fellow cadets their entire life. Adora has few rivals among her fellow cadets, with the exception of the willful Catra; the two have a friendly rivalry and often venture on mischievous escapades.

As fate would have it, Adora stumbles into the Whispering Wood, an area of Etheria that is considered treacherous rebel territory and often under siege by Horde troops. Something inside beacons to Adora, a magical sword that may hold the key to the secret of who she is or where she really comes from. When Adora holds up the sword and speaks the mantra: "By the honor of Grayskull!" she is bathed in light and embodies the power and spirit of She-Ra the Princess of Power! Her two new friends Glimmer and Bow quickly realize they've found a new ally.

It isn't long before Adora learns that she can call upon the legendary powers unlocked by the sword of power whenever there is danger or innocent lives are at risk. She can turn her trusted steed into Swiftwind a winged-unicorn and she pledges herself and this new power in the surface of the rebels fighting to protect Etheria and rebel the Evil Horde. Choosing the path of light, Adora defends the realm and along the way will uncover the secret of her true origins, and the family that she has never known and the new friends that will decide her fate in the universe!

Animated in a contemporary anime style that will immediately endear itself to the cosplay crowd "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" is a great deal of fun and worth the chance to turn into family time viewing. It will appeal to adults just as easily to young viewers and delivers on the adventure while also promoting positive messages, while not cramming morality plays down the audience's throats. In a world where positive role models are fleeting, this is one animated series that has succeeded in producing a heroine for the ages that speaks to today's genre enthusiasts.
