Starman

Veteran director John Carpenter didn't just direct horror classics like "Halloween" and sci-fi cult hits such as his remake of "The Thing." He also made sleeper hit films and non-violent science fiction tales. One such forgotten and underrated film is his 1984 fan favorite "Starman". This new Blu-ray release could only come from Scream Factory and gets added to the several restored Carpenter films that have come out in the past few months.

"Starman" has much in common with Steven Spielberg's 1982 mega-hit "E.T." In this Jeff Bridges starring film, he plays the alien Starman who's been sent accidentally to Earth. Karen Allen ("Raiders of the Lost Ark") plays Jenny, a widower who has holed herself up in a remote cabin in Wisconsin. Starman clones himself as Jenny's deceased husband and the two embark on a quest to save Starman's life.

Carpenter's "Starman" is a love story above all else and the science fiction elements blend in nicely. And even with its PG rating, we get to glimpse Jeff Bridges' bare behind in his first scene.

Those looking for a 30-plus years old nostalgia trip are encouraged to pick up Scream Factory's "Starman" Collector's Edition Blu-ray. There are some vintage special features to watch (courtesy of a prior DVD release) and some brand new ones also:

"They Came from Hollywood: Re-visiting Starman" – an extensive documentary that has interviews with John Carpenter, Jeff Bridges, and Charles Martin Smith, among other

"Audio Commentary" – this vintage featurette has both John Carpenter and Jeff Bridges on the making of "Starman"
