Diary Of A Future President

Something to aspire to.

Gina Rodriguez is pulling double duty in this latest original series appearing on the subscriber-based streaming service Disney+. "Diary of a Future President" is a glimpse into America, the "real America," and the profound impact of its immigrant citizens, who travel from their home countries inspired to discover their true potential in a country promised of opportunity. Elena (Rodriguez) has just been named to the highest office in the country, but her journey to President of the United States began long ago.

Flashback to middle school: A 12-year-old Elena (Tess Romero) is growing up in Miami and proving every bit as ambitious and rambunctious as any other young person. Elena has dreams and loves pop music; her favorite television series is a magical adventure. She has great pride and enthusiasm for her studies. And she would never want to disappoint her mother, Gabi (Selenis Leyva). The matriarch of her family works hard as a lawyer to provide for her two children, including Elena and her older brother Bobby, a boy who gets into trouble – a lot!

Elena begins to write in her diary in the sixth grade and begins to shape a future for herself that is goal-orientated and leads to nothing less than success. But adolescence is always going to get in the way. Whether it's daydreaming about the sweetheart she's admired since as long as she can remember, or muttering over the slightest imperfection that comes with puberty, our heroine is going to do her best to persevere, because she has plans to one day rule the world, for the good of all Americans, from the oval office.

Given the state of affairs in the world today, and the clouds of uncertainty our young people have to endure (especially the children of immigrants fighting for their voice), "Diary of a Future President" is an engaging diversion, relevant and surefooted. It raises the volume, if even a bit, on those voices that are feeling disenfranchised and forgotten. It's coming of age stories like this that are needed at the moment. Each episode is easily digestible, family-friendly, and especially entertaining.

Created by Ilana Pea and executive produced by Gina Rodriguez, the series isn't meant to feel preachy or profound. The messaging is much clearer than that: Always remember how you got here. The journey is as important, with all its bumps and bruises along the way, and you always have friends and family to help keep your vision alive. "Diary of a Future President" should get all of our votes!
