Body Parts

Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The word "melodramatic" came to mind constantly while viewing Shout Factory's latest retro Blu-ray horror release. But the theme is body reconstruction in an audacious film based on a much superior novel called "Choice Cuts." The overall high-definition presentation of "Body Parts" appeals to the senses, even if the acting and scenes of horror can be hammy at times.

Originally released in 1991, "Body Parts" made close to $10 million at the box office. But it was pulled quickly after serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was in the news for his murderous and grisly deeds. The controversy didn't help "Body Parts," but the film did generate a cult following over the years - hence this current Blu-ray.

Jeff Fahey ("Psycho III") plays Bill, a man who gets his arm severed in a car accident. After the arm from a donor becomes grafted onto his body, Bill starts to act violently towards his wife (Kim Delaney) and two children. Bill soon discovers that other men have had similar reconstruction surgery, and the three of them learn the terrifying truth of their donor.

But "Body Parts" is hardly terrifying. In fact, most of the scenes had me howling with laughter. However, this new Scream Factory Blu-ray comes recommended for those who like early '90s horror with a crazy, over-the-top '80s sensibility.

Along with deleted scenes and an audio commentary from director Eric Red, there are 4 new interview segments on Scream's Blu-ray:

"I Dare You to Read the Script" – an extensive career overview segment with director Eric Red

"Something Unstoppable" – actor Paul Ben-Victor sits down for a brief chat

"Molded for Cinema" – Peter Murnick talks about the highs and lows of his acting career

"That One Hurt" – Editor Anthony Redman discusses his role in making "Body Parts"
