The Final Terror

Shout Factory, how I love thee. You've pulled out yet another cult horror movie from oblivion, one that had to be culled from six different source prints to come together on a terrific Blu-ray package. "The Final Terror" is here, a movie that became notorious on the early '80s movie circuit after its main actors became huge stars.

Darryl Hannah, Adrian Zmed, and Rachel Ward star in this campers-in-peril genre in which the stars are off for a weekend of fun in the woods. As seen in the requisite opening prologue, there's an unknown assailant in the wooded area offing young attractive teens.

In "The Final Terror," homages to "Deliverance" and "Friday the 13th" are all too glaring, yet filmmaker Andrew Davis makes the genre all his own. The oddly titled movie is more thriller than horror, and because it was filmed in 1981, it doesn't have the grisly murder sequences that fans might expect. It's more a character study of which young star will survive to the end credits.

A darkly filmed movie, "The Final Terror" looks surprisingly amazing for using such varied films sources, and Shout/Scream Factory should be proud. Fans should rejoice that this Blu-ray even exists.

The Blu-ray also has many different special features to choose from. Both Adrian Zmed and Lewis Smith do on-camera interviews, where they talk about the film and their careers. An audio commentary with director Andrew Davis features a few lulls of silence but it's interesting to listen to him discuss the unique filming process and why his film was shelved initially in the beginning.
