Out 'Bodies Bodies Bodies' Actor Responds after Backlash to Her Note to Critic

Out "Bodies Bodies Bodies" actor Amandla Stenberg sent a teasing message to film critic Lena Wilson of the New York Times, and Wilson posted the comment, which went viral. Now Stenberg has responded to the backlash her missive sparked, Variety reported.
Variety explained that Wilson's review said the slasher flick "doubles as a 95-minute advertisement for cleavage." Stenberg, who wears a tank top in the film, sent Wilson a DM that said, "ur review was great, maybe if you had gotten ur eyes off my tits you could've watched the movie!"
Insider reported that Wilson, who is also out, reposted the DMs on social media with the words, "Unfathomably weird to get 'I don't want you in the locker room while I'm changing' bullying from a whole other lesbian."
Wilson's post went on to add: "I am devastated to have received this message in the first place. I was genuinely a huge fan of hers, but I'm posting it because I don't want this person who has more social power than me to think that it's f----- okay to do something like this."
The Los Angeles Times detailed that the film critic "also accused the actor of being homophobic," tweeting that it's "always weird when the homophobia is coming from inside the house but this is something."
In another tweet, Wilson depicted the situation this way:
"me: (spends one line of a 500-word review facetiously commenting on how A24 objectifies young women to sell content)
"random men on twitter dot com and also, apparently, amandla stenberg: Local Dyke Cannot Stop Talking About Boobies"
Wilson's twitter account has since been made private.
"Stenberg's comment generated backlash after it was posted to Twitter by Wilson," Variety noted, "but the 'Bodies Bodies Bodies' actor said in her own Instagram video that she was just trying to be funny with her message."
"I'm receiving a lot of commentary on the internet for being a very naughty girl and for sending a DM that I thought was hilarious," Stenberg told her followers. "I thought because Lena is gay – I am also gay – I thought that as gay people we would both find this comment funny."
Insider recounted that "Stenberg, who said she's often experienced sexualization since she was a teen," had more to say.
"I know when I'm wearing a tank top there's going to be cleavage because I have boobs," the actor continued. "So I knew that this comment was probably mostly directed towards me."
Stenberg took into account that "Lena was trying to make a commentary about A24 sexualizing me – sexualizing my body, exploiting young women – in order to sensationalize them to make their media more popular," before going on to explain that "I wore this tank top in this movie because me and the costume designer thought that it fit the character well."
The actor offered an olive branch to Wilson, saying, "Anyways, Lena, I thought your review was hilarious. I thought my DM was funny. I did not mean to harass you. I do not wish you any harm. You are allowed to have your criticisms on my work, and I'm allowed to have my criticisms of your work. And that is A-OK with me, and I wish you the best."
