Watch: Model Ashley Graham on Hugh Grant Oscars Interview: 'Kill 'Em with Kindness'

Model Ashley Graham had a brief interview with British actor Hugh Grant at Sunday night's Oscars, but it had outsize impact, illustrating a clash of cultures and commanding the internet.

Graham's comment on the painful exchange? "You know what, my mom has told me to kill them with kindness, so there you go," the model told TMZ.

Vanity Fair reported on what happened on the red – rather, make that "champagne" – carpet on Oscar night, when Graham tried to coax some commentary from Grant.

The entertainment outlet noted that "Graham's innocuous question – 'What's your favorite thing about coming to the Oscars?' – yielded a now highly debated miscommunication."

With its report verging on the meta, Vanity Fair recounted that "Grant replied that the event was 'fascinating,' adding, 'The whole of humanity is here. It's vanity fair.'"

Graham, not understanding that the 62-year-old British actor was probably making a reference to the 1848 novel by English writer William Makepeace Thackeray, jumped on that, saying, "Oh, it's all about Vanity Fair. That's where we let loose."

Vanity Fair – the magazine – noted that Graham was making a "reference to the annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party, which kicked off right after the awards."

Grant's face registered incredulity.

Things spiraled downward from there, VF recounted. "When Graham followed by asking Grant whom he was most excited to mingle with at the 95th Academy Awards, he said: 'Um, no one in particular.' After Graham inquired about his styling, Grant replied that he was wearing 'just my suit.'"

"Your suit?" Graham exclaimed. "Who made your – you didn't make it!"

"I can't remember. My tailor," Grant told her.

"That's okay. Shout out to your tailor," Graham offered.

Even Graham's question about Grant's cameo in the "Knives Out" sequel, "Glass Onion," where he appeared as the husband to Daniel Craig's (now confirmed gay) detective, sparked a barely lukewarm response, as Grant noted, "I'm barely in it – I'm in it for about three seconds."

But, Graham pressed on, he had fun with his bit part, didn't he?

"Ah – almost," the actor said, garnishing the hash the interview had become with a roll of the eyes.

Some chalked up the bizarre exchange to the famous reserve of the British, with the Washington Post noting that "the exchange was not at all surprising in Britain, where part of the social fabric is to avoid bragging, talking too much about oneself, or even admitting to how much fun one is having. Discussing expensive designer labels? A crass faux pas."

The Post pointed to Twitter comments about the interview, in which one person posted, "Hugh Grant doesn't mean to be rude here, but this is how it feels like to be British and confronted by absurdly enthusiastic American extroverts."

Others tended to agree.

Much of the American Twitterati, however, called Grant on the carpet all over again for the bewildering moment.
