Sophistication Reigns Supreme in Fall Home Décor
EDGE null READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Changing the dcor of our home at this time of year is fun, a wonderful way to let loose our creativity. It makes sense, too. For just as we replace cotton cardigans with cozy, wool turtlenecks, sandals with boots and straw belts for smooth leather when the weather turns, revamping our personal environment can not only add beauty, but make us feel better emotionally, as well as physically, preparing us for the seasonal turn and all that comes with it.
"The market is overflowing with new and exciting introductions," says Sally Morse, Director of Creative Services for Hunter Douglas. "These new designs are unique enough to make a big difference both in your home's look and mood without requiring a major overhaul or too much work on your part." Following are some of her favorite ways to update any home:
Très Glam Touches
Come autumn, the smartest dcors, be they minimalist, transitional, traditional or unequivocally one-of-a-kind, will exhibit at least a few out-and-out, oh wow, glamorous touches. They're easy to find for every room of the house, from highly original wallcovering and the latest window treatments to light fixtures and a gamut of accessories.
The good news too, is that a little goes a long way. Imagine papering the foyer in a textured metallic material or one embellished with mother of pearl or glass beads - there are solids, bright and dark, and patterns ranging from small and simple to large and splashy.
Or how about adding a shimmering glow to the den with linear LED lights hidden within the ceiling cove, dramatic yet not overwhelming, bringing the essence of raw silk to a window fashion with 21st century light control options or piling pillows gleaming with faceted crystals and silky embroidery on the sofa to add textured oomph to the entire room?
While all of these may be too much, picking one or two favorites is just enough.
Walk on the Wild Side
Some call the floor the "fifth wall." Make the most of it with a woven rug graced with a pattern, subtle or bold depending on the room and your personal taste. As provocative as fine art these days, the right one can add an entirely new dimension to any space. The wealth of choices can be overwhelming, so bring a photo of the room in question to the carpet store. You might be happily surprised by your salesperson's suggestions.
Gold and Brass Touches
Taking the place of silver and nickel tones in the freshest design schemes are gold and brass, warmer than their predecessors and able to exude either a formal or relaxed air depending on the piece. Consider small items like table lamps with brass or gold-leafed bases, magazine holders combining a leather sling with a matte brass-finished iron frame or a wood desk or vanity with brass-plated legs.
"Search out the new introductions in the world of interiors even if you don't have anything specific in mind," counsels Morse. "One small purchase could mean a stunning change in your home, and in your lifestyle."
