Rapper Azealia Banks Defends Use of 'Faggot' (Again), Calls it Feminism

Days after posting a defense on Instagram as to why she feels she can use the word "faggot," rapper Azealia Banks once again explained her use of the gay slur during an interview, Jezebel reports.

Banks spoke with Xorje Olivares of Sirus XM's "QutQ" radio station and explained why she insists on using the word "faggot" and why she doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon.

"When I use the word 'faggot,' it comes from a feminist point of view," the bisexual musician said.

Olivares asked Banks to define the slur.

"The word 'faggott' came to me from my mother," she said. "And it was never a thing about a guy being gay. It was always just a man who hates women. You can be gay or straight. You can be a straight faggot... Faggots are men who want to bring women down, fuck with their heads, control them."

Banks then goes on to comment on how she's notice misogyny within the gay male community.

"I definitely think a lot of the time with the 'white gay media' - especially with female artists - in order for you to seem successful or seem feminine you have to desire their approval," she said. "I feel like a lot of times gay men can be way more misogynistic than even straight men. Even how they come to you picking at your hair, telling you you're fat, telling you all this other shit. Telling you how to be a woman. What the fuck do you know about being a woman?"

She also added that she doesn't think she's being anti-gay.

"To be homophobic would imply that I'm, like, 'I can't sit next to a gay man cuz Imma catch the gay, but I already caught the gay," she said. "I feel like when I use the word 'faggot,' it comes from, like, a feminist point of view, not a homophobic point of view. It's really just kinda like you feel attacked as a woman."

Last week, the "212" rapper came under fire when she posted a message on Instagram, wondering why she's hit with flack when she calls herself or someone else a "faggot" but gay men can call women a "bitch."

"[Why] is it not okay for me to colloquially use the word 'Faggot' to refer to myself or an opponent? Do gay men get a special pass to say misogynistic things simply because they Like dick?" the 23-year-old rapper wrote. "The argument is that countless gay kids hear the word 'faggot' before they are beat to death...But do you know how many women hear the word 'Bitch' before their husbands beat them to death? Before they are murdered/raped....?"
