Watch: Gay Porn Star Opens Up About Racism in Adult Film Industry, GayVN Awards

Gay porn star Sean Zevran opened up about racism in the adult film industry and the now-nixed "Best Ethnic Scene" category at the GayVN Awards, which sparked outrage this week.

After gay porn actor Hugh Hunter took issue with the category, sharing an open letter about the matter and announcing he was declining his nominations at the ceremony, Zevran, a performer of color, posted a YouTube video, sharing his feelings and announcing he is also declining his nominations.

In the clip, Zevran says he has "mixed feelings" about the category, which has since been nixed and its nominees merged into the "Best Duo" category.

"...On the one hand, as we know, it's incredibly challenging for actors of color, for us to be recognized for our work in the industry, and a lot of it goes underrepresented or unrecognized when it comes to the award," he explains. "So, I would like to think that GayVN had the best intentions behind having a separate category, because otherwise, I fear that some of the work of us that have been nominated in this category would go entirely unrecognized or not given the recognition it deserves."

He goes on to say: "On the other hand, the counterargument to that, is that it casts ethnic minorities in this industry as the 'other,' that there's something to be distinguished between our work and mainstream, that it needs to be a separate category.

"I think both are legitimate perspectives, and I think there is a little effect of both happening here," Zevran concludes. "I don't know the answer to this."
