Watch: Gus Kenworthy Opens Up About Being Openly Gay at the Olympics

In a new video profile from The Washington Post, free skier Gus Kenworthy opened up about how he feels about being an openly gay athlete at the Winter Olympics compared to when he was closeted at the Games in Sochi, Russia four years ago.

"For me being in the closet, I guess I just didn't picture another life for myself," he said. "I thought that's kind of like how it had to be, and after skiing was done I'd be able to, like, have a boyfriend, have a husband, be out, be proud, but it was gonna be after everything else.

"It just got to the point where the pain of lying and holding on to it," Kenworthy added. "I'd always feel like I was avoiding answers and never getting to be myself was just so painful."

Kenworthy, who came out after the Sochi Olympics in 2014, recently qualified to represent Team U.S.A. and is headed to PyeongChang, South Korea next month. He recently made headlines earlier this week when he appeared in an ad for Head & Shoulders shampoo where he waved the rainbow LGBTQ Pride flag.
