Watch: Zac Efron Plays Serial Killer Ted Bundy in Trailer for 'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile'
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
This isn't your Zac Efron in "High School Musical."
The actor is starring in a new movie that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last weekend where he's taking on a more serious role: Serial killer Ted Bundy.
The trailer for "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" dropped over the weekend where Efron plays the charming family man turned murderer and rapist. From director Joe Berlinger, the film follows Bundy from the perspective of his girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins) who is struggling to accept her boyfriend is a monster. The movie also stars John Malkovich, Jim Parsons and many more.
After the trailer hit the Internet, it seemed like people were divided about it. The Washington Post notes some thought the "upbeat rock music in the background, making some feel like they were watching a trailer for a rom-com....
The main critique that surfaced: Have Efron and director Joe Berlinger 'romanticized' the serial killer?"
Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson wrote the role for Efron is "a triumph of sorts" but adds that's "also a bit of a problem, a further indictment of our serial killer-sick culture that the film, directed by documentarian Joe Berlinger, doesn't reckon with enough."
