Watch: Gay 'American Idol' Contestant Makes to Top 20, Says Parents Haven't Accepted Him
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
It was an emotional night for "American Idol" contestant Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon.
Honoring Stevie Nicks, Harmon performed a minimalistic version of the Fleetwood Mac 1975 ballad "Landslide." As he has been for the last few weeks, the singer blew the judges away again, making their cut for the show's top 20.
Harmon made headlines when he revealed he's gay and was working as a janitor in his father's church in Catonsville, Md. He said he recently came out to his parents and moved out of their house.
Fighting back tears, he recently told the "American Idol" judges, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, his parents have not accepted him yet.
"It has been a really difficult past few months for me," he said. "My parents still have not been able to accept me being gay. I'm no longer working as a janitor at my dad's church.
"I decided to move out and that was a difficult choice to make. I felt like it was the healthiest thing for me to do," he continued. "Being a part of this show has been good for me in one way, but it has also been a big challenge for me. I'm just being very public about my story and it's causing a lot of change in my life right now."
Harmon added that he remembered listening to "Landslide" "after having a really tough conversation with my parents."
"I went to bed that night and really connected to it," Harmon, 26, said. He continued that he wanted to dedicate the performance to his parents, who didn't come to Hawaii to support him. Thankfully his boyfriend John was there for him.
"I want my parents to know that I love them no matter what," he said. "I'm sorry for disappointing them and not turning out to be everything that they dreamed of."
After his performance Perry comforted Harmon.
"I just got to keep telling myself that I can do this," he said. "I'm doing this for me, I'm doing this for everyone who has been outcast by their loved ones. I know this isn't just my experience. If I can be open about it and vulnerable, then maybe that can bring hope to somebody else.
"I was going to dedicate that song to my mom and dad. They were on my mind when I sang that," Harmon added. "I just want them to know that I love them and I tried to communicate that."
After telling him he made the top 20, Perry said she could relate to him. The pop star started off as a Christian singer and is also the child of a pastor.
"Look, you're a pastor's kid, I'm a pastor's kid – we have a lot in common," she told him. "I don't know about you, but for me, I was always being watched.
"Then I started to find my true voice. Can you imagine when my first single was "I Kissed a Girl" and my parents, how they reacted? It was difficult for me because I felt very alone in what is supposed to be a very exciting time in my life," Perry added. "It has taken some time, but we've all come around to agree to disagree. I just want to say from one pastor's kid to another that I see you and I love you and I accept you and I'm so proud of you."
