The major candidates running for state attorney general who responded to the Bay Area Reporter are lining up against an initiative on the November ballot that would legalize marijuana, putting even liberal Democratic candidates at odds with those who say it's time that law enforcement get out of the pot business.

Singer-songwriter Vonda Shepard's musical soul

Spring has just sprung, and Vonda Shepard is hitting the road again! This time, however, it's for a family getaway with her husband and four-year-old son. "We haven't had a vacation in over a year and a half," she notes, "so we're really looking forward to this!" She laughs when it's pointed out that she just returned from a European tour. "Yeah, well I suppose you could look at it that way. I brought my son on tour. So can you imagine a grueling concert trip where one day we had three different flights during a blizzard to get to Romania?" Happily it will be a well-rested Shepard who, having just tended to her flock, will make her debut at the Rrazz Room this Friday and Saturday.

Breath Made Visible

My mother died. So I grabbed this Anna Halprin documentary, Breath Made Visible, directed by Ruedi Gerber, to review. Pictures of Halprin in her post-Martha Graham phase reminded me of my mother in her black leotards and tights, hair pulled back, looking serious and strong and dedicated. Turns out, my mother was not as dedicated as Anna Halprin, whose career traces the key conceptual breakthroughs in dance, theater, and performance art from 1950 on.

Thoroughly modern Merce

Maybe someday a Gay Studies dissertation will explain the link between "The Gay Closet and Cryptic Tendencies in Modernist Art." If so, the dances of the late Merce Cunningham, the greatest and most disconcerting of the Modernists, might serve as the best field to explore, since they are so beautiful and so inscrutable as to repay all the attention that can be expended upon them. His mixture of fascination and boredom leaves Gertrude Stein in the dust. We just saw his swan-song, "Nearly 90 [2]," in Berkeley this past weekend, sponsored by Cunningham's staunch lifelong supporter, Cal Performances, and it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Playwright Todd Almond on Homosexuality in the heartland

While the new musical Girlfriend is about two guys who become boyfriends, the title is not to be read as gay vernacular. "When people ask me what the play is called, I say, 'It's called Girlfriend, but not Girlfriend, like, hey, girlfriend.' There's that little comma," said Todd Almond. "It's almost like a subtitle." The Bay Area Reporter sits down with playwright Todd Almond. Read on

Milk school seeks return of Harvey's iconic bullhorn
