Best of the year in Bay Area dance
Last year, looking back was bizarre, since the consumerist bubble had broken and we were traumatized. This past year's been weird as well, since nothing decisive has happened. To me it's felt like the "phony war" of 1914 must have, before the real thing got rolling. But even in the midst of uncertainty, many wonderful events occurred.

Patrik Gallineaux's Cinderella story
Patrik Gallineaux was seen in the documentary My Life on the Craigslist teaching straight couples how to dance before their weddings. Earlier this year, he helped create the hugely popular Dancing with the Drag Stars that teamed professional ballroom dancers with cross-dressing local personalities. His latest project is choreographing an unconventional production of Cinderella that the African-American Shakespeare Company or is presenting through Dec. 27 at Buriel Clay Theatre. As the one-year anniversary of the brutal gang rape of an out lesbian in Richmond approaches, the woman - known to the public only as Jane Doe - continues her recovery. The preliminary hearing in the case is set for early 2010.
