Tender loving care
A not-so-guilty pleasure each month involves dropping down to a two-chair barbershop where I surrender to the sheer joy of a shampoo. What is so relaxing about having someone who knows what they're doing touch your hair? One of the biggest bonuses in watching the new Lebanese film Caramel is a vicarious version of this same tactile treat, in a bit of fun between two female characters.
Cybill Shepherd gets personal
The interview came to a brief halt. "Excuse me, I have to sing some opera," said Cybill Shepherd. She rose from the hotel-suite couch and let forth, full-throttle, with a few moments of an Italian aria. "That is my new reaction to panic."

Decisions loom in presidential primaries
For gays in states with the largest gay populations, such as California, it's decision time in the 2008 presidential race. From the evidence available - anecdotal and indirect - most gays are trying to choose between the top two Democratic candidates - Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. For those who will consider only a Republican, the choice appears to have also narrowed to two - John McCain, whose record has been relatively moderate on gay-related issues, and Rudy Giuliani, whose record has been relatively supportive but whose campaign is relying on a sort of "Hail, Mary" strategy that starts in Florida on January 29.
The shock of the new: San Francisco Opera's 2008-09 season
For the first San Francisco Opera season that he has planned in its entirety, General Director David Gockley is thinking new. New as in one world premiere and one West Coast premiere, both with strong Bay Area roots; seven new productions total; new and significantly lower ticket prices for certain sections/situations; and new media initiatives to attract new audiences.
Dead Mother, or Shirley Not All in Vain
There's a showbiz term called "jumping the shark," inspired by a Happy Days episode in which the Fonz jumps over a shark while water-skiing. Basically, it means a plot twist so implausible that you know the writers are in trouble. You might say that David Greenspan's play Dead Mother, or Shirley Not All in Vain jumps the shark after about five minutes, and then never quits for the next two hours. But in this case, the outrageous, the outlandish, and the off-the-wall tangents are such a part of the fabric of the piece that not even the arrival of a philosophical sperm whale is shark bait.
