Man-child in the promised land: Jean-Pierre Leaud
The final freeze-frame in Francois Truffaut's 1959 masterpiece The 400 Blows is perhaps the most indelible, oft-imitated image in cinema. At the end of this semi-autobiographical film, young Antoine Doinel, a lost soul rejected by his parents and adrift in the world at a tender age, runs back and forth on a deserted beach before he turns toward us and the camera captures his face mid-motion. What direction will he go, the audience is left to wonder.
The ABCs of MRSA
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a very diverse family of bacteria that is found in nature, humans, and animals. It can cause everything from a common pimple to food poisoning to life-threatening pneumonia and blood infections.
Tiger, tiger, burning bright
By now you're heard and read ad nauseam about the Christmas-day tiger attack at the much-beleaguered San Francisco Zoo. As far as we can tell, there is no gangle (gay angle) to the story; otherwise, our news pages would be full of it, too. But a filmie friend reminded us that in the 2002 movie The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, the Catholic schoolboys of the title (Kieran Culkin, Emile Hirsch) hatch plans to kidnap a big cat from the zoo and set it free in strict Sister Assumpta's (Jodie Foster) living quarters. Life imitates art?
The swinging's mutual: Nancy Wilson & Trio
Jazz vocalist Nancy Wilson is making a rare concert appearance in San Francisco on Saturday, January 19, at the Herbst Theatre, sure to be one of the musical highlights of 2008. Listening to Wilson is a lot like butter heated in a pan. It sizzles, pops, bursts with bubbles, and you know adding it to your meal will certainly make the taste rich and delicious.
Data on staph links gays
Gay men are significantly more likely to become infected with what some researchers call the "superbug" MRSA - methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus - than are heterosexuals, according to a new study. Much of the transmission appears to be through sexual contact, though historically, transmission often is through non-sexual contact, generally via hands that touch infected skin or non-living surfaces contaminated with the bacteria.
Speed-the-Plow
American Conservatory Theater has maintained a winning streak in recent seasons by mining the David Mamet library, notably with such rollickingly vulgar plays as American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Sexual Perversity in Chicago. So there was strong reason to believe the trend would continue with Speed-the-Plow. Alas, the production seldom more than skitters over the surface of the harsh Hollywood satire. This is Mamet served mild, when the recipe calls for a sizzling roast.
A 'love child' returns to the stage
It's been 17 years since The Secret Garden, composer Lucy Simon's first and only Broadway musical, opened in New York. But while she has other projects in the works, including a musical based on Dr. Zhivago, she's only too happy to talk about The Secret Garden.
