There Will Be Blood
It was a publicist's wet dream: former boy wunderkind director comes out of semi-retirement to show his new film fresh from the lab, and voila: 700 or so young guys fill downstairs at the Castro Theatre on a Monday night when the big screen is usually dark. At about 7:30 p.m., director Paul Thomas Anderson strode up to the stage accompanied by the Castro's young programming duo. The 37-year-old director didn't so much address the crowd as take them in, inhale them as a kind of silent confirmation that the journey was nearly over, the circle almost complete, and a real paying audience would soon deliver its verdict on that most American of stories: a bold re-imagining of Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel, Oil!

Nutcracker, now and forever
Such a lot of talent. What wonderful dancers. It's a long, long time from May to December - from May, when the ballet season ends, till December, when the dancers reappear, a little flustered but eager, in their really big show, The Nutcracker, which began this year's run last Thursday, Dec. 13, and continues through Dec. 30. Nutcracker is the company's bread-and-butter. Starting Out in the Evening

Don't worry, arts writers in the BAR and elsewhere will have plenty of look-back pieces to share by the close of 2007. In looking over our own stacks of books and records in preparation for the final push towards year's end, we found our copy of the self-published memoir Beauty for the World: A Spiritual Odyssey (iUniverse) by author <slug>Han Shin</slug>.
