The Muppets

Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The return of the Muppets as film stars engendered much cause for celebration - and the box-office returns of "The Muppets" proved that the world is always ready to say hello to Jim Henson's greatest creations. The story of Walter, his brother Gary (Jason Segal), Gary's girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) and the evil Texas oilman named Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) is fun, nostalgic, giddily entertaining, and hilarious. What Segal (who co-wrote the script) does is make the Muppets hip, without reshaping who they were originally meant to be. While the older films were amusing ("The Muppet Movie," "The Great Muppet Caper"), "The Muppets" adds the right kind of humor and flair that will make it connect to all age groups and can be enjoyed on many different levels. While the earlier movies would be considered strict family films, this installment is "Everyone's Film."

Included on the Blu-ray are a number of extras, not all of which are all that entertaining.

The Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made4 (In Muppet History - We Think) is an 8-minute segment of mistakes made my cast and Muppet alike. More cute than funny.

Disney Intermission - where the Muppets take over the screen every time you stop the disc.

Scratching the Surface: A Hasty Examination of Making of Disney's "The Muppets" - a whimsical look at the making of the movie.

Explaining Evil: The Full Tex Richman Song: the full-length rap that Chris Cooper performs as the evil Tex Richman. Oddly, this explains exactly why he hates the Muppets and would have been given his actions a bit more heft.

A Little Screen Test on the way to the Read Through: amusing yet pointless "skit" where the Muppets head through the offices of Disney for the first read through.

Eight (not very good) Deleted Scenes

Audio commentary with Jason Segal, James Bobin, and Nicholas Stoller.
