A Los Angelean, who reportedly identifies as gay and transgender, has been hospitalized after being attacked in what police are calling a hate crime, CBS Los Angeles reports.

The alleged assault occurred on Thursday, May 30 when victim, Victor Diego, 22, was attacked by a group of men after leaving work at Beso Restaurant in Hollywood, which according to Radar Online, is co-owned by "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria.

CBS reports that Diego was "dressed up" to hang out with friends. The victim's sister spoke with reporters and said , that as a result of the assault, Diego suffered two fractured ribs, a shattered cheekbone and a broken jaw. adding that the attackers kicked the victim in the temple and that Diego must undergo surgery.

"He was basically left for dead just because of who he is," she said.

Diego's sisters told the news station that the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Division are investigating the attack as a hate crime.

"We don't want this to happen to anybody else," Diego's sister said. "We just want somebody to come forward and let us know what they saw. He deserves justice."

It should be noted that it is not clear if Diego identifies himself as a man or woman. The report states Diego is a transgender person and that he is gay. His family, however, references Diego as a male.
