Pastors Blame Gay Civil Unions and Abortion for Colorado Wildfires

Two conservative pastors took to their radio show last week to try to figure out why wildfires are currently destroying forests in Colorado Springs, Colo. Rather than citing something logical, like global warming, pastors Kevin Swanson and Dave Buhner blamed the natural disaster on abortion and gay civil unions, Opposing Views reports.

On their "Generations" radio program Swanson and Buhner brought up how abortion was legalized in Colorado in 1967 and that gay civil unions were recently passed into law. They concluded that the two controversial issues pissed off God, causing him to set the fires, according to Right Wing Watch.

"Why Colorado Springs? Understand that Colorado itself is a state that has been begging for God's judgment. How did we do that? Well, we were the first state to make abortion legal. You could murder your baby as long as it's in your womb," Buhner said.

Swanson added, "1967. Two ironies there, not just one, the man's name was Gov. Love and he's responsible for killing more babies than probably anybody in the history of this country because he's the guy who started it."

They then went off on gay rights, claiming civil unions in Colorado were the cause of the fires.

"Our legislative session opened up this year and their very first order of business, their most pressing order of business... Like the very first day, was to pass a civil union bill, which is an uncivil bill," Buehner said.

They also determined that a Denver Post photograph of State House Majority Leader Mark Ferrandino kissing his partner Greg Wertsch also angered God, Right Wing Watch reports.

This isn't the first time religious leaders have blamed the LGBT community on a natural disaster.

In October of last year, John McTernan, author, pastor and founder of Defend and proclaim the Faith ministries, fired off in a blog post, suggesting the LGBT community and President Barack Obama's support for marriage equality were to blame for Hurricane Sandy.

He wrote that Sandy was "the most powerful hurricane on record" and "could do catastrophic damage to the entire Northeast." McTernan added, "Obama is 100 percent behind the Muslim Brotherhood which has vowed to destroy Israel and take Jerusalem. Both candidates are pro-homosexual and are behind the homosexual agenda. America is under political judgment and the church does not know it!"

"The church in America is now EXACTLY like ancient Israel before the Babylonians destroyed them. Both ancient Israel and the modern American church completely lost the fear of God," he said.
