22 Held in Montenegro for Attacking Country's 1st Gay Pride

Montenegrin police say they have detained 22 people over the clashes that erupted during the first ever gay pride event in the staunchly conservative Balkan country.

Police said in a statement Thursday that they are working to identify more people who were responsible for the incidents during the march on Wednesday in the coastal town of Budva.

Several hundred people attacked the participants in a bid to disrupt the gathering. They threw rocks, bottles, glasses and even chairs on the gay activists and their supporters, as well as the police securing the event.

Police say two people sought medical help for minor injuries. They say police intervention prevented bigger unrest.

Montenegro is known for its macho male culture and must boost its human rights record to join the EU.
