Gay marriage supporters are taking time to mark the one-year anniversary of the election in which voters gave same-sex couples the right to marry in Maine.

Supporters gathered Wednesday in Portland to mark the anniversary of the vote.

Sarah Dowling and Linda Wolfe of Freeport married over the summer. Dowling said that when she left the church where they were married, she "exhaled a breath I've been holding in for 20 years."

The Rev. Don Rudalevige described the state Wednesday as a symbolic tipping point for same-sex marriage because Maine was the first state to pass a law through voter referendum.
