Love or Whatever

Like many gay independent films, "Love or Whatever" features no special features in its DVD. The film is able to stand on its own, thanks to the charm of the story and antics of actress Jennifer Elise Cox (who will forever be Jan Brady from "A Very Brady Movie"). Cox is the sister of the main character, Corey, who sees his life upended when his boyfriend realizes he's "flexi-sexual" and leaves the uptight Corey for a woman. After a little wallowing, and a lot of support from his sister, Corey gets back on the horse - thanks to Grindr - and ends up on a journey of self-discovery.

The film succeeds despite its main character. Corey might be one of the least likeable main characters ever in the romantic comedy genre. Throughout the film he comes off as unlikeable and self-centered, creating problems in both of his relationships and ethical complications for his psychiatry practice. It's a wonder that Corey has so many hot guys beating his door down to date him.

We've entered an era where dating apps like Grindr have become integrated into the plots of comedies. Rather than being used as a plot device for mistaken identities, screenwriters Dennis Bush and Cait Brennan play it straight (so to speak) with the app serving as a way for Corey to connect with his cute pizza delivery guy. The incorporation of Grindr and similar apps into romantic comedies reflects a shift in the way that guys are meeting each other today and the fact that it wasn't included as comedic device is a further comment on how many gay men use these apps to meet other guys in the dating scene.

Ultimately, the film rushes through its third act, giving an ending that is both quick and too nicely tied up in a bow. Being a romantic comedy, it's not hard to guess how things are going to end up, but staying true to the characters and previous events should be considered when trying to appropriately construct a fitting ending. Despite the few missteps, "Love or Whatever" is an entertaining modern day comedy that offers laughs, heart, and, you know, whatever.
