The Goldbergs - The Complete First Season

Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The best show you're probably not watching, "The Goldbergs" arrives on DVD for you to instantly fall in love with. Whether or not you grew up in the 80's, this "Wonder Years"-inspired sitcom is fast and funny, and has a big heart without being saccharine. Starring Wendi McLendon-Covey ("Bridesmaids") and Jeff Carlin, the show revolves around the Goldberg family which consists of Mom, Dad, eldest Son Barry (Troy Gentile), middle sister Erica (Hayley Orrantia), and baby of the family Adam (Sean Giambrone). The entire show is based on creator Adam Goldberg's family and he has the video to prove it. Just like his onscreen counterpart, he took loads of videotape when he was a kid and it is fascinating to see those clips at the end of each episode that relate to the story you just saw. Besides the nostalgia of it all, "The Goldbergs" is downright hilarious and truly one of the best comedies currently on television. You get all 23 episodes, including "Goldbergs Never Say Die" - the hilarious nod to "The Goonies."

For fans, the extras will delight. There are four amusing episode commentaries by some of the cast and crew; a 20-minute behind the scenes featurette called "Blast from the Past: Making Season One;" "Our House: The '80s Revisited" which focuses on set design; "On the Set with Jeff Garlin" which follows the actor around for a typical day on the set; "Patton Oswalt: Adam Grows Up," a featurette on Oswalt's participation as the narrator of the show; as well as "Costumes of the '80s: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" where you find out that Bev's sweaters on the show were sent to them by the real Beverly Goldberg. Fun stuff! All that's missing is a blooper reel.
