Colombian Woman Uses Potato as Contraceptive, Grows Potato Baby Instead

No, this is not the lost episode of "Fact or Fiction." This is an actual story.

A 22-year-old Colombian woman told doctors that she put a potato in her vagina to do the job of a contraceptive, after her mother suggested the bizarre method.

According to an article from Colombia Reports (via Jezebel), the tale comes from a campaign that aims to reduce the high levels of teen pregnancy in Colombia, writing, "that young people's general rejection of conventional contraception methods, such as condoms and contraceptive pills, coupled with a macho society which often saw girls pressured into having unprotected sex, contributed to a high level of unwanted teenage pregnancies."

The report goes on to say:

"The fact that a 22-year-old woman was so nave as to believe that a potato was an appropriate and safe method of contraception shows a concerning lack of education for young people as to the options available for them when they become sexually active."

Apparently, after putting the potato in her "oven" and letting it hang out there for two weeks, she started to get abdominal pains. While in her vagina, the root vegetable reportedly grew roots inside her.

The woman did not suffer any serious injuries as the doctors were able to remove the potato and its roots without surgery.

Let's just hope she doesn't use a french-fry as a tampon next.
