The Purge - Anarchy

Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.

"The Purge: Anarchy" is so laughably bad that it makes "The Purge" from 2013 look like an Oscar winner. It cheats the audience into thinking it has something extremely valuable and important to say about society and the way humans act, but the shallow end result confuses more than it titillates. Audiences saw it in droves in the summer of 2014 and now, with the Blu-ray release, those fans can relive the whole experience again.

A year after the events of "The Purge," a brand new array of society's denizens band together on the night of the annual purge, an event where any crime can be committed unpunished. Unfortunately there's no brooding Ethan Hawke this time around. Before telling each other to "stay safe," an unlikely group (a mother and daughter, an estranged couple, and a mysterious young man) band together to fight derelicts on the streets.

"The Purge: Anarchy" basically remakes the 2013 "Purge," albeit with louder, ear-splitting, over-the-top situations and an implausible plot. Michael Bay produced this bloody sequel, and it has his stamp all over it.

The biggest cheat of all is the lack of in-depth special features on the Blu-ray. Five deleted scenes try to give a little more development to the characters, but they appear pointless. An eight-minute promotional spot for the film features brief snippets with filmmakers and actors. Unless you're a die-hard "Purge" fan, this Blu-ray should be avoided.

A third "Purge" has been announced for the summer of 2015. Stay safe.
