Back to the Future II: 15 Most Anticipated Albums of 2015

Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 14 MIN.

Last week, we detailed which TV shows you need to tune into in the new year and in this second feature, we've listed 15 of the most anticipated new albums that are expected to drop in 2015.

Kanye West - Album: TBD Release: TBD

Kanye West's follow up to his 2012 visceral and aggressive classic "Yeezus" is on its way. The current reigning King of Pop dropped a single on New Year's Day that is in a totally different direction. Yeezy ain't mad anymore - no, he's in love. Not with Kim (at least on this track) but with the other two most important women in his life: his baby daughter North and his late mother, Donda West.

"Only One" is a soft, heavily auto-tuned lullaby inspired by Kanye's mom, backed with a simple piano played by Paul McCartney. "Only One" is said to be one of "several" tracks where the Beatles star will appear. In addition to that, rapper Ty Dolla $ign told Billboard that he worked with Kanye and McCartney as well as Rihanna on a track that will be released "soon." Whenever "soon" is it isn't soon enough as Kanye's seventh album is shaping up to be one of his most interesting records to date. If I had to guess, it'll be out at the end of quarter one or start of quarter two.

Lana Del Rey - Album: "Honeymoon" Release: Late August

It's only been about seven months since Lana Del Rey released her second record "Ultraviolence" and a few weeks since she let go two new songs for the new Tim Burton film "Big Eyes," but the sad girl singer is already well into her highly anticipated third album. Just this week, Del Rey revealed the title name, "Honeymoon," and said she's written nine tracks and four of those have "perfect" production, telling Billboard, "I'm looking for a few more songs to tie everything together."

She also revealed that she plans on covering "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," made popular by Nina Simone and said the sound of her record is "noirish" and sounds closer to her first album, "Born to Die" and less like the rocky "Ultraviolence." According to other reports, she's worked with "Uptown" hit-maker Mark Ronson and she told a French magazine "Honeymoon" will have a "strong jazzy influence," and that it'll be out in late August.

Rihanna - Title: TBD ("R8" working title) Release: TBD

Many of us hoped Rihanna would save 2014 by "Beyonce"-ing her eighth album in the middle of December. But that door closed even though Riri returned to Instagram and started uploading clips of her in the studio. We still don't have a single, but we know an album is right around the corner. We once could count on Ri for new music as she released her last four albums in late November. But it's been two years since her lackluster "Unapologetic," which is the biggest Ri drought we've ever seen. Hopefully the Navy won't have to wait for long for new music.

Madonna - Title: "Rebel Heart" Release: March 9

It's been a tumultuous time for Madonna. Pretty much all of her new music has leaked - months before she planned to even release a single. This act of "terrorism," as the Material Girl called it, forced her hand and she had to name her album, set a release date and put six songs up on iTunes. So far, from what we've heard, it's been a mixed bag (even though she's working with some interesting artists like SOPHIE, Diplo and Blood Diamonds) but her single "Living For Love," is one of the better singles Madge has put out since "Confessions on the Dance Floor" - let's hope the other six tracks follow suit.

Adele - Title: TBD (Possibly "25") Release: TBD

Adele has been super quiet, coming off the highs of her incredibly successful 2011 album "21." It was rumored last year that the soul singer was going to Beyonce her album via iTunes but her record label XL ruled that out. Still, we have this cryptic tweet that's keeping up hopes we'll see a new album in 2015: "Bye bye 25...See you again later in the year x," she wrote on May 4. Naming her album "25," would fall in line with her previous two records, "19" and "21," but only time will tell.

Frank Ocean - Title: TBD Release: TBD

We know Frank Ocean is working on his follow up to his breakthrough debut "Channel Orange" and there have been suggestions that he's working with Australian rock band Tame Impala, British indie soul singer King Krule and U.K. producer Danger Mouse. The possible concept album is said to have a "beach feel," and if his fuzzy two-minute demo of a song called "Memrise," which he posted to Tumblr last year, is indication, Ocean's new album is going to be chilled out to the max.

Sky Ferreira - Title: TBD Release: TBD

It took several years for Sky Ferreira to put out her stellar debut "Night Time My Time" after a series of scrapped records, Eps and aesthetics, but the young singer is gearing up for a new release in 2015. She's working with past producers, song-making mastermind Ariel Rechtshaid and Justin Raisen. She's also apparently teamed up with Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes.

Bjork - Title: TBD Release: TBD

It's been awhile since we've heard from the legendary Icelandic musician Bjork, but according to reports she's working on new material. She's teamed up with producer de jure Arca - the openly gay Venezuelan producer who helped craft FKA twigs' music and worked on Kanye West's "Yeezus." His dark and minimal approach fits perfectly with Bjork's aesthetic and this young producer's touch may be what Bjork needs to put out an edgy and aggressive comeback LP.

Giorgio Moroder - Title: TBD (Possibly "74 is The New 24") Release: Spring 2015

Giorgio Moroder rose like the legend of the phoenix when he teamed up with Daft Punk's incredible comeback album in 2013. Though it's been 30 years since his last solo album, the producer is expected to come back in 2015 with a bunch of new songs. What's more exciting is the lineup of stars he's allegedly worked with: Charli XCX, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Sia and more.

Grimes - Title: TBD Release: TBD

Indie darling Grimes was supposed to release her follow up to her breakthrough LP "Visions" last September, but after dropping the confusing EDM-inspired single "Go," which was a song Rihanna rejected, Grimes has headed back to the studio. She's tweeted hints of the new material, saying she's been drawn towards guitars and she completed a glam rock song. Who knows how Grimes' new effort will shape up, but she's smart enough to know where to go next.

Joanna Newsom - Title: TBD Release: TBD

It's hard to believe it's been five years since folk singer Joanna Newsom dropped her three-LP epic "Have One On Me" but she's kept busy in that time off: She married "Saturday Night Live" alumni Andy Samberg and more recently, her distinctive voice narrated the trailer to "Inherent Vice." But in a recent interview, she's revealed she's "working on something new" and that she's "been working hard for a lot of those five years on a new idea." Who knows what it could be but any new Newsom music in 2015 is exciting.

Chromatics - Title: "Dear Tommy" Release: Before February 14

Chromatics are one of the best bands working in the industry and plan to follow up their impeccable 2012 album "Kill For Love" opus with another 17-track epic album called "Dear Tommy." The band's mastermind, Johnny Jewel (best know for solidifying a late night sound on the "Drive" soundtrack), said the album will be out "in time for Valentine's Day," which is perfect considering Chromatics' dreamy, noir and angsty sound. Though Jewel has yet to release any new material, two amazing songs that appeared on the band's label's 2013 compilation album will be on "Dear Tommy." If those tracks are any indication the new material will easily live up to "Kill For Love."

Tobias Jesso Jr. - Title: "Goon" Release: March 7

Tobias Jesso Jr. is a singer-songwriter new to the music world, though he's been trying to get his foot in the door for sometime. After being scooped up by former Girls member Chet White, Jesso's newly record tracks, like "Hollywood," are gut wrenchingly wonderful. The young singer's stripped back sound is refreshing and a collection of warble-y ballads is going to be a peak release this year.
