Unbroken
JC Alvarez READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Perhaps the scope of the film "Unbroken" is so ambitious that it's hard to imagine that the film was directed by undoubtedly one of Hollywood's biggest stars. When that star is Angelina Jolie, it can be overwhelming to imagine that "Mrs. Smith" or "Maleficent" found the intrigue in this historical biography about one man's indomitable spirit, but then it becomes abundantly clear why Jolie, who herself has faced great scrutiny and controversy, would find so much in common with this tale.
"Unbroken" is more than just a film, it's an experience; the unsung story of Olympian Louis "Louie" Zamperini who in the midst of World War II survives a destructive plane crash, only to find himself adrift in a raft at sea, and then in the hands of the enemy. The true life events surreally come to life when Zamperini (played by Jack O'Connell) is tortured by his Japanese captors. His strength of will is put to the ultimate test.
What makes this story so compelling (beyond how richly and gingerly it is handled by its director, Jolie) is how invested we become in Louie, who emerges from a working class background, on the wrong side of the tracks, to an Olympic contender. The horrors of war are all too real, and when our hero is thrust into midst of battle only to become a prisoner himself, his journey out of peril is one of legend. Zamperini's unbreakable perseverance is a testament and lesson to us all.
Now available on Blu-ray and presented in full HD and theater quality sound, bringing Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" is a must-have! Heralded as one of the "Best Movies of the Year" the film was recognized for its extraordinary achievement. An additional documentary reveals "The Real Louis Zamperini" who unfortunately passed away before the film's wide theatrical release, and the Blu-ray is loaded with "exclusive" features.
Go behind-the-scenes with the cast and crew for an "Inside Unbroken" featurette, deleted scenes, and more round out this incredible package. "Unbroken" is transcendent.
