Breathless
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.
The 1983 remake that's as deep as a shallow river, yet looks divine, makes its official Blu-ray debut finally. "Breathless" continued the trend of casting sex symbol Richard Gere in another role featuring his cocky swagger and naked body parts. His zany and hyper portrayal of the dim-witted and lovestruck Jesse elevates this French film redo just above trashy status.
Not faring as well in this tale of a thief and killer on the run in Los Angeles is Gere's mostly nude co-star Valerie Kaprisky, looking lost and aloof for the most part. She purportedly claimed their sex scenes weren't all staged. On Blu-ray, Jim McBride's version of "Breathless" pops out with stunning visuals; most apparent are in the film's opening scenes with Gere driving along while red neon hues surround him.
A soundtrack featuring the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, X, and the Pretenders aid with the film's luscious visuals. But Shout Factory drops the ball this time around, offering up the film's non-narrated trailer as the only special feature on the Blu-ray.
Is Mr. Gere embarrassed by his full-frontal performance? Did director McBride not want to be interviewed or do an audio commentary? These unanswered questions are as ambiguous as the ending of 1983's "Breathless".
