The Colbys - The Complete Series
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.
The two-season spin-off from the 80's nighttime soap opera "Dynasty" now comes as a complete package for the very first time on DVD. Of course, Shout Factory gets credit once again for releasing a long forgotten about show called "The Colbys" which aired from 1985-1987.
Also known as "Dynasty II," "The Colbys" is just as fun, silly, campy, and over the top as the show that inspired it. In fact, the show about Jeff Colby (John James) and his move to California can be seen as a carbon copy of "Dynasty" with different actors. There are the legendary movie stars (Charlton Heston and Barbara Stanwyck), the bitchy Alexis-like character of Sable (Stephanie Beacham), the misbehaved Colby offspring (Tracie Scoggins), and an array of outrageous sets and costumes.
A few of the stars from "Dynasty" appear too (John Forsythe, Diahann Caroll), creating a linear storyline as both shows were airing simultaneously.
But the show's creators jumped the shark and must've thought they had nothing to lose when they ended the series in 1987 with an outlandish cliffhanger, the infamous alien abduction of Fallon (Emma Samms). This was frustratingly barely resolved and blown off when the storyline moved back to "Dynasty."
All 49 episodes are included here, and the viewing quality seems a bit above par compared to other TV sets on DVD. Lucky for us fans, three of the show's stars do separate interviews on the final disc of season two. John James, Stephanie Beacham, and Maxwell Caulfield nicely reminisce about their time on "The Colbys."
