Extraterrestrial

I really wanted Katy Perry's hit song of the same name to be playing over the beginning or ending credits to "Extraterrestrial." Alas, this tongue-in-cheek event didn't happen during the mostly somber 100-minute running time of the new Vicious Brothers ode to alien abduction films. After a long silence regarding movies about aliens, "Extraterrestrial" doesn't offer much that hasn't been seen many times before.

A "Cabin in the Woods"-ish setup fools the audience into thinking this might be a slasher flick or a rip on the "Evil Dead" films. After a small group of friends goes to a April's (Brittany Allen) summer childhood home, things suddenly turn mysterious when some of them start disappearing one by one. The friends discover an abandoned spacecraft and suspect that aliens have come to destroy them.

As usual in such films, the local authorities are skeptical, leaving us the audience predicting how each scene in "Extraterrestrial" will pan out.

Only a few supplemental features come as bonuses on Shout Factory's vivid Blu-ray transfer of "Extraterrestrial." A 7-minute snippet of behind-the-scenes material comprises "The Making of Extraterrestrial," mostly featuring interviews with the Vicious Brothers. They talk about coming up with the idea of the film, and discuss key scenes (such as the laughable anal probe scene). Faring better is the audio commentary with them and along with actors Brittany Allen and Melanie Papalia; it makes for a more enjoyable listening experience than watching the actual film.
