Wild Tales

Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The six revenge stories that comprise Argentine writer-director Damin Szifrn's Oscar-nominated movie "Wild Tales" not only live up the movie's title ("Relatos salvajes" in the original) but have the added bonus of being both hilarious and sharply observed.

The theme of revenge offers many facets, and Szifrn gleefully explores the subject from a variety of approaches, starting with a fairly straightforward pre-open title tale about an airliner whose passengers all have something in common. (It it more than a coincidence? You'd better believe it!) After this rollicking start, the film veers at top velocity through the rest of its offerings, which include a young woman getting a little murderous help in settling a score with a malicious politician, a road rage showdown in the desert, a demolition expert taking on an exploitative city bureaucracy (and seeing his life unravel as a result), a family drama about a hit and run accident, and a not-quite-white wedding that could have been the result of a Quentin Tarantino fever dream.

This Blu-ray release offers some theatrical trailers (including the trailer for "Wild Tales") and two other extras. One of them is a behind-the-scenes featurette called "Wild Shooting: Creating the Film." This is typical of its ilk: Interviews with the cast and crew, footage of a few scenes as they are being prepared for filming. The other is titled "An Evening at the Toronto International Film Festival with Damin Szifron," and is exactly what it sounds like: The director introduces the film, and later on takes questions from the audience.

The extras may only be of mild interest, but it doesn't matter. This anthology movie has so much going on you won't need anything else.
