Welcome to Me
Christian Cintron READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Kristen Wiig is insane in all the right ways. In her new indie film, "Welcome to Me" she blends the adorable quirkiness we've grown to love with a hard-hitting performance of a woman with mental illness. Fans that only know her from "Saturday Night Live" may be a little shocked about how serious this film really is. There's plenty of humor and funny moments but it is more funny-weird than funny-HaHa.
Alice Kleig (Wiig) has borderline personality disorder and a pretty uneventful life. When she wins the lottery, she decides to change everything around. She turns her obsession with Oprah into a daytime talk show on a small network. There's mixed reactions from the station's owners Rick (James Marsden) and Gabe Ruskin (Wes Bentley).
The film is entertaining but it doesn't really pay off narratively. It has a really great cast including Joan Cusack and Jennifer Jason Leigh but doesn't bring closure to any of the characters besides Wiig's character and to a lesser extent her best friend played by Linda Cardellini. There are also clearly some scenes that were removed or aired out of sequence. And yet, the Blu-ray is lacking in the way of bonus features that might shed some light on these characters lacking importance or the need for the casting choices. You can have great acting but if people are hardly in the film it's more shocking and confusing than exciting.
The Blu-ray does have a short featurette that talks a bit about the film. It mostly talks about how well the cast gelled and Shira Piven's directing. But it doesn't really fill in any of the gaps left by the movie itself. The film does do a great job of providing a vehicle for Wiig to explore darker and more serious roles. She commits to the role with a severe intensity and a full frontal scene. It is great as a testament to Wiig's acting but may not enter the heavy rotation of your favorite movies.
