Adult Beginners

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Comedian and writer Nick Kroll, best know for his role on FX's "The League" and his Comedy Central series "Kroll Show," has taken his feature film career by the horns in this sincere and low-impact mumblecore indy produced by the Duplass Brothers.

"Adult Beginners" revolves around the classic coming of age formula except the characters going through the traditional rites of passage are already adults. Featuring charming performances from Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale, the story primary belongs to Kroll with cameos from Joel McHale, Josh Charles, Jane Krakowski, Bobby Moynihan and Mike Birbiglia.

The slightly douchey, hipster Jake (Kroll) seems poised for success as his tech startup hits the market. His product is a variation on Google Glasses, and (surprisingly enough) his company quickly implodes.

Though he was never available for his sister Justine (Byrne) when she needed him -- she gave up her career to provide hospice for their dying mother -- Jake comes to her after his company's crash, as the only family he has left, looking for a place to stay and someone to help him pick up the pieces of his shattered life.

Jake gets along great with Justine's husband Danny (Cannavale) who welcomes the broken entrepreneur with open arms and suggests that he earn his keep by taking care of their 3 year-old son, Teddy.

Fundamentally a good guy, Jake excels at being a babysitter and endears himself in the community. He starts dating another nanny, Blanca (Paula Garcs), and even lands a good job back in the business world. But he quickly learns that adulthood is more than having a good job after he discovers that his pal Danny is cheating on Justine, and Blanca is just using him for sex.

It's always fun to see how these low-budget movies get made and small-time stars kickstart their careers. You get a glimpse into this in this Blu-ray's sole special feature, "The Making of 'Adult Beginners.'"
