Unfriended

Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.

Let me get this off my chest; I'm so not a big fan of social media, current video technology like Skype, or Facebook. Color me surprised that there are many elements to the new Blu-ray "Unfriended" that I enjoyed, which takes into account those very social media aspects in its plot.

I found the concept of five teenage friends who spend the entire movie on a video chat fairly intriguing and clever. Played out in real time, the secrets of said friends come to the surface via an unknown caller who joins the chat. It seems recently, the suicide death of a tormented classmate remained unresolved and the five friends could be to blame.

Of course, all five victims could very well shut down their laptops and stop using social technology. But playing along with "Unfriended's" current media trends is part of the movie's charm.

At a mere 83 minutes, you can't go wrong with this thriller from horror filmmaker Jason Blum ("The Purge", "Ouija"), and it neither overstays its welcome nor disappoints with a bold, new concept.

While I can recommend "Unfriended" the movie, the same can't be said for a purchase of Universal's Blu-ray. This classic movie company usually rocks in the bonus features department; yet you won't find a single one on this unfortunate bare bones disc. For fans of this recent contemporary horror film, that's bad news that can be spread like wildfire online.
