Toolbox Murders 2

Let's set things straight: Shout Factory's latest Blu-ray sequel release neither follows up the 1978 cult hit "The Toolbox Murders," nor does it come on the tails of Tobe Hooper's fan favorite of the same name from 2004. "Toolbox Murders 2", a most vile film, sat on the shelf for years until it was released under the title "Coffin Baby." To cash in on an ever-growing trend of direct-to-Blu-ray releases, "Toolbox Murders 2" has an in-name-only reference to Hooper's superior film.

For a plot, we get a damsel in distress (Chauntal Lewis) who gets kidnapped and tortured by a serial killer in Hollywood. This is after she and the police discover her sister died at the hands of the same killer.

And then for 80 some-odd minutes, "Toolbox Murders 2" plays out like a sequel in the "Saw" series: Victims are tortured with contraptions, weapons, and fists. Throw in legendary actor Bruce Dern, who inexplicably shows up here and there for no apparent reason, and you've got one of the most pointless films ever made.

"Toolbox Murders 2" has an acid trip-like feeling to it, much like Rob Zombie's horror films. Director Dean C. Jones ("X-Men: First Class") fills this bloody feature with some interesting visuals but throws in overused shaky and mumbled camera angles.

The only sole bonus feature happens to be the theatrical trailer, so save your money for a much better Blu-ray purchase that I'm sure Shout Factory will release in the very near future.
