2015 TV Fall Preview: 5 Must Watch Shows

Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 6 MIN.

The days are getting shorter and the weather cooler: Summer 2015 is coming to an end, and so are the season's small screen programs. With the "Mr. Robot" finale airing last week, one of the best TV shows of the year wrapped up its debut season. It's now time to move forward and look to the fall, which is the most exciting time of the year for any TV fan.

But unlike years past, this fall presents an issue: With networks stepping up their game, and streaming services creating plenty of original content, there's more programming than ever before. Not only is there a lot to choose from, but the quality of the selection is top-notch, making some people feel overwhelmed when looking for something to watch after their nine-to-five.

In order to avoid a case of #FOMO, EDGE selected just five out of the hundreds of programs airing this fall that are worth your attention -- shows likely to trend on social media, become critical darlings, or sound downright fun.

"Scream Queens" (Fox) Airs: Sept. 22

There's nothing like a brand new Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk show! The duo's comedy-horror "Scream Queens" looks creepily delightful. Murphy and Falchuk, who also created the hit FX anthology series "American Horror Story" (more on that later!), seemed to use the show for the foundation of "Scream Queens."

Like "AHS," "Scream Queens" will also be a campy anthology series. For its first season, the show centers on the Kappa sorority, which is lead by Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts). After a 1995 sorority pledge gone wrong, someone is out for vengeance when the Wallace University campus is rocked by a series of murders during the 20th anniversary of the crime. The school's dean, Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis), threatens to shutdown the sorority after the mysterious "Red Devil" wreaks havoc on the college.

"Scream Queens" boasts a stellar cast of girl, including "AHS" veteran Emma Roberts (who is channeling her "AHS: Coven" role; bitchy Madison Montgomery), Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele, Skyler Samuels, Keke Palmer and more. Pop stars Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas have special roles, as does "Getting On" and "Reno 911" star Niecy Nash. Judging from the show's trailers, "Scream Queens" looks like a lot of naughty fun - something we're dying to watch!

"The Leftovers" (HBO) Airs: Oct. 4

"The Leftovers" returns for a second season this October and things look dramatically different since we checked in with the Garvey family. It's a fresh start for everyone: Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) and girlfriend Nora Durst (Carrie Coon) move from the upstate New York town of Mapleton to Jarden, Texas -- a special town that did not experience the horrific event that caused two percent of the world's population to vanish.

It's also a new beginning for the show's producers. Season Two marks the first time "The Leftovers" won't use Tom Perrotta's book as a source material, allowing showrunner Damon Lindelof and his team to create fresh episodes. From what we've seen so far, Season Two looks just as depressing as the first season, and is full of intense, moody tension. It's nearly impossible to tell where "The Leftovers" will go this season, but with the apparent return of Patti (Ann Dowd), the leader of the Mapleton chapter of the Guilty Remnant, who was presumably murdered, Season Two looks like a thrill.

"American Horror Story: Hotel" (FX) Airs: Oct. 7

"American Horror Story: Hotel," is the fifth season of the "AHS" franchise, and the first without leading lady Jessica Lange. In her place, is Lady Gaga, making her television debut as Elizabeth/The Countess, the owner of the titular hotel, Hotel Cortez. Whether or not Mother Monster can fill in Lange's enormous and talented shoes remains to be seen, but "Hotel" boasts an impressive ensemble, including "AHS" veterans, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, Chloe Sevigny, Denis O'Hare, Evan Peters, Finn Wittrock, Emma Roberts, and Mare Winningham. The show also features impressive newcomers, including Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson, Max Greenfiled, Naomi Campbell, Madchen Amick and Darren Criss.

Though showrunners Ryan Murphy and Falchuk have offered little about the plot of "Hotel" (all we know is detective John Lowe (Bently) is investigating the Ten Commandments Killer in Los Angeles, which is connected to the Hotel Cortez), the duo revealed most of the cast's roles. Paulson will play bad (her first time in the series) as Hypodermic Sally, who lives at the hotel and is a drug addict. Bates is Iris, the manager of the hotel and Bassett Ramona, an actress. Wittrock, who blew fans away in last season's "Freak Show," will be a hypersexual male model named Tristan and Rabe will portray real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

As always, this season of "AHS" looks promising, but there's more on the line this time around: Without Lange in the picture, and coming off the last two frustrating seasons, "Hotel" has a lot to prove.

"Fargo" (FX) Airs: Oct. 12

It's going to be hard to top the first season of "Fargo," the movie-turned-TV-show that was an unexpected hit last year. This time around, the anthology series goes back to 1979 and tells the story of Lou Solverson (Patrick Wilson), who appeared in Season One as the father to police officer Molly Solverson (Allison Tomlan).

In Season Two, Lou is fresh off a tour in Vietnam and is investigating a crime involving a local gang and crime syndicate. Taking place in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Luverne, Minnesota and, of course, Fargo, North Dakota, Lou is also assigned to protect Republican presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan, during his campaign stop in the Great Plains.

The fantastic cast includes Ted Danson, Jean Smart, Kristen Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Nick Offerman, Brad Garrett, and more. Though FX has only released a few teasers for the upcoming drama, Season Two of "Fargo" is shaping up to be another home run.

"Wicked City" (ABC) Airs: Oct. 27

The "True Detective" effects are finally being felt on network TV. While this isn't the best pitch to check out "Wicked City," the upcoming true crime procedural anthology sounds promising.

Starring Ed Westwick (of "Gossip Girl" fame), Erika Christensen ("Traffic"), Jeremy Sisto ("Six Feet Under") and Taissa Farmiga ("American Horror Story"), the first season of "Wicked City" takes place in the early 80s in Los Angeles. Police detectives, journalists, drug dealers, and club-goers team up in order to find a serial killer wreaking havoc on the Sunset Strip. Thanks to the teasers ABC released, the series looks stylistically cool, sleek and sexy.

It will be interesting to see ABC's take on prestige TV and what the network can do with fantastic actors who haven't been in the spotlight in sometime. Though NBC's "Aquarius" was a disaster, network TV can still get lucky. With a decent script, the promising "Wicked City" sounds a lot of fun with Westwick at the helm.
